MVP Cricket vs Spond.

Spond is a free, multi-sport team app that’s strong on events and payments. MVP Cricket is built only for cricket: it syncs your scorecards from Play-Cricket every day and turns them into stats, MVP points and published team sheets.

The short version

If you want a free, general-purpose app for events, RSVPs and collecting money, across several sports, Spond is a good choice. If you want the app to know it’s a cricket club, with results, scorecards and stats from Play-Cricket, a leaderboard your players check every week and proper team sheets, that’s what MVP Cricket is for.

Where Spond is the better fit

  • You want a free app and are happy to pay a transaction fee instead of a subscription.
  • Your club runs several sports, or you mostly need events, RSVPs and group messaging.
  • You want native apps from the App Store and Google Play.
  • You want a hosted club website from the same provider.

Where MVP Cricket is the better fit

  • You want results, full scorecards and player stats synced from Play-Cricket every day, not just a fixtures import.
  • You want an MVP leaderboard and Player of the Match from every scorecard: the thing that gets players opening the app.
  • Captains want to draft, publish and get confirmations on a team sheet, with only changed players re-notified.
  • You want card fees at Stripe’s own rate with nothing added on top.

What it costs a club in a season

Take a club collecting £15,000 in a season, in 1,000 card payments averaging £15, all on standard UK cards.

On MVP Cricket’s Club plan that costs £99 for the year, plus Stripe’s own fees of £425 (1.5% + 20p a payment), paid to Stripe from the club’s account: £524 in total, and none of the £425 comes to us.

On Spond the app is free and the transaction fee is 2.5% + 20p, which includes Stripe: £375 + £200 = £575, deducted from what the club collects unless it passes the fee to payers.

So on these numbers the two cost much the same, with MVP Cricket about £50 a season cheaper. The real difference is what you get for it: daily Play-Cricket scorecards, stats, the leaderboard and team sheets.

One caveat in fairness: on MVP Cricket, premium and corporate cards cost more at Stripe (2.8% + 20p), so a club whose members pay mostly on premium cards will pay a little more in Stripe fees than these figures.

Switching

Every club starts on MVP Cricket’s Free plan: connect Play-Cricket with your site ID and the leaderboard and stats fill from the season you’ve already played, so you can run both side by side before deciding. How the Play-Cricket sync works.
