Customer story · Brookweald CC

One club, one full season, run from the app.

Before MVP Cricket opened to other clubs, it ran a whole season at Brookweald Cricket Club: availability, selection, published team sheets and match fees, with a leaderboard players checked after every game.

The problem

Brookweald is run by volunteers, like most clubs in English cricket. Its Secretary and Treasurer, Rob Harvey, was the one chasing forty-odd people every week: who’s available on Saturday, who’s been picked, who still owes for the last three games. The tools were the usual ones: a WhatsApp group, a spreadsheet, a captain’s memory and a pocket of cash.

What changed

The fix that worked wasn’t a better spreadsheet. It was the leaderboard. Every Play-Cricket scorecard became MVP points, and a public board turned the season into a race players followed and argued about. Once they were opening the app to check their points, they were already there when the availability poll arrived, when the side was published and when the match fee link came through.

“Once players were checking their MVP points after every game, they were already in the app, and availability, selection and paying their fees stopped being a chase.”

How the season ran

  • Availability: one tap per match day, for every game that Saturday.
  • Selection: captains picked from who was actually free, drafted the side, then published it; every selected player got a push notification to confirm.
  • Match fees: requested against the team sheet, paid by Apple Pay or Google Pay into the club’s own Stripe account, with cash marked on the spot. More than £7,000 collected, with no percentage taken.
  • Stats and points: synced from Play-Cricket every morning, so nobody typed in a scorecard twice.
