How to collect cricket match fees without chasing
Every club treasurer knows the pattern: a WhatsApp group full of “I’ll transfer you later”, a captain with a pocket of cash, and a spreadsheet nobody trusts by July. Collecting match fees well comes down to four things.
1. Charge against the actual team sheet
Fees should follow selection, not a list someone typed up. In MVP Cricket the captain requests the match fee from the published team sheet, on the day or the treasurer afterwards, so it goes to exactly the players who played, at the right rate: standard, home, away or junior, and zero for a friendly if that’s what the club decided.
2. Make paying take one tap
Every selected player gets a pay link that opens a hosted checkout with Apple Pay and Google Pay. No login, no bank details to copy, no screenshots of transfers. Members pay exactly the amount requested; nothing is added on top.
3. Let cash be cash
Some players will always pay at the ground. The captain marks them paid on the spot, or waives a fee, from the match-day screen. It goes on the same ledger as card payments, with a record of who settled what.
4. Give the treasurer one board
The owing board lists every open item by player across the whole club: match fees, subs instalments and one-off charges. One tap sends a reminder. For the perennially-behind, bundle everything a player owes into one statement and send it by WhatsApp: one link, one payment, and every item settles together.
The money is the club’s
Payments go into the club’s own Stripe account, which the club connects and owns. Card processing is Stripe’s standard rate, and every payment shows gross and fees separately so it reconciles in a minute. MVP Cricket takes no cut.
That matters more than it sounds. Club apps that are free to install typically charge 2.5% or more on everything you collect, card processing included, against Stripe’s own 1.5% + 20p. Club costs £99 a year and adds nothing on top of Stripe. We’ve worked through a full season’s costs vs Spond, vs Teamo and vs Pitchero.
Proved at a real club
Brookweald Cricket Club ran a full season of match fees on MVP Cricket before anyone else used it: more than £7,000 collected from 40+ members. Read how the season went.
Questions
Where does the money go?
Straight into your club’s own Stripe account, which the club connects and owns. MVP Cricket never holds club money and takes no percentage of it.
What does it cost the club?
Match fees are part of the Club plan: £9.99 a month or £99 a year. Card processing is Stripe’s standard rate, charged by Stripe to the club’s account, and every payment shows gross and fees separately.
Do players need the app to pay?
No. A pay link opens a hosted checkout with Apple Pay, Google Pay and card. No login, no app store, no account needed.
What about players who pay cash?
The captain marks cash as paid on the spot, on match day, from the team sheet. It lands on the same ledger as card payments, so the treasurer’s totals always add up.
Can we charge different rates?
Yes. Set standard, home, away and junior rates once; a friendly can be zero. Each match uses the right rate for each player automatically.
Can a parent pay for a junior?
Yes. Anyone with the link can pay it: a parent, a partner. It comes off the player’s account, and for juniors the link can go to their emergency contact instead of the child.
